In February 2008, Lyle showed us the "easy way" to make a bowl and and a hollow form using green wood.  (Click on the image to see the bigger picture.)

  • Malcolm stops the lathe at just the right time. All that remains is to clean up the bottom by hand and apply the finish.
  • Starting a hollow from, again balance the piece between centres.
  • Bring to round using the bowl gouge.
  • Nearly finished the initial stage between centers.
  • Attach the face plate.
  • The order in which the wood will be removed.
  • Most of the outside is done leaving a mass at the base.
  • Drill to start the inside.
  • Using the laser guided hollowing rig to start the inside.
  • Start the inside by widening the hole.
  • How to ensure the laser is giving the right measurement.
  • The laser guides the tool to the inside surface
  • Removing the lower exterior now that the inside in complete.
  • The shavings always land on the person with the face shield!
  • Completing the piece by finishing the base and reversing between centers - not shown.
  • One of the sculptural types of pieces that Lyle is known for.
